Texas Tech 35 - Baylor 28 - FINAL Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008
5:50 p.m. -- It's over here at Jones AT&T Stadium as Baylor's bid at an upset falls short as Tech drops the Bears 35-28.
5:35 p.m. -- Texas Tech takes the lead on a Graham Harrell fade pass to Detron Lewis from four yards out.
After a kickoff return to the 28-yard line by Mikail Baker, Baylor has 72 yards and 6:10 to go to try and pull off the upset.
5:25 p.m. -- After scoring to tie the game at 28-28, Texas Tech intercepted a Robert Griffin on third down and are driving to take the lead for the first time since the second quarter when the Red Raiders led 14-13.
5:02 p.m. -- Outstanding block by freshman Kendall Wright to spring fellow freshman Griffin on a 24-yard run. Baylor in Tech territory and driving.
They announced attendance at 53,470, which is an over-capacity crowd. Lots of no-shows today.
4:55 p.m. -- Still no punts today... Red Raiders march 72 yards and score on a short run to cut the Bears' lead to 28-21 with 5:52 left in the third quarter. The only two non-scoring drives of the day (for either team) were the two takeaways by the Baylor defense.
4:39 p.m. -- Bears bust out to a 28-14 lead after Jacoby Jones ran in from 1 yard out with 11:04 on the clock.
Rumor in the pressbox has it that Michael Crabtree is done for the day after injuring his ankle. Tech QB Graham Harrell was seen with some bandages on his finger, yet to be seen how serious (or correct) that is.
4:36 p.m. -- Big 47-yard rush by Jay Finley to get BU into the red zone in the opening drive of the second half. Back-to-back 100-yard rushing games for Finley, first feat by a Baylor player since 2003 (Rahshad Armstrong).
Baylor 21 - Texas Tech 14 - First Half Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008 Heath Nielsen
4:16 p.m. -- Baylor is 4-1 thus far this season when leading at the half. This is BU's first halftime lead against Tech since 1995 - also the last game Baylor defeated the Raiders.
Strong showing by the Bears in the first half. Baylor's D has held the Red Raiders to 135 yards and forced two turnovers. Other interesting stats: Griffin is 7-for-7 passing and has had a hand in all three touchdowns... Joe Pawelek was not credited with a tackle in the first half... Baylor held the ball for 15:54 in the first half.
4:10 p.m. -- After a review-overturned goal-line play, Robert Griffin hit Earnest Smith on a 1-yard TD toss. A spectacular Griffin scramble and pass completion to Kendall Wright, who made a great leaping catch, on the 2-point PAT gave Baylor a 21-14 lead with 1 second left in the half.
Time expires on the kickoff. HALFTIME SCORE: Baylor 21 - Texas Tech 14.
3:58 p.m. -- Baylor's D comes up with its second takeaway of the day as seniors Leon Freeman and Vinny Rhodes teamed up on a fumble. Freeman forced the fumble by batting Tech QB Graham Harrell's grip of the ball and Rhodes dove on the loose ball.
Baylor offense takes over first and 10 at the Tech 16, 1:27 til halftime.
3:52 p.m. -- In a slight wrinkle in his final collegiate game, senior Dwain Crawford started at safety. Sophomore Tim Atchison made his third start of the season at cornerback. The Bears defense has held Tech's high-octaine offense to 142 yards with a minute and a half left in the first half.
3:50 p.m. -- Another long drive, this by Baylor, ended without a score as Ben Parks missed a field goal wide to the right.
Texas Tech now takes over with 1:39 left in the half. The Raiders are currently without All-America receiver Michael Crabtree, who left the field with an injured ankle at the end of Tech's last offensive drive.
3:38 p.m. -- A 16-play drive ends with a Baron Batch TD run for the Raiders, and the extra point gives Tech a 14-13 lead at the 7:18 mark.
The two teams have combined for five drives, resulting in four touchdowns and an interception thus far. Neither team has punted yet.
3:29 p.m. -- The first quarter consisted of three long drives and game's fourth drive, to open the second quarter, is no different. Tech is driving as the clocks nears the 10 minute mark to half.
3:19 p.m. -- The Bears capitalize on Johnson's pick and score on four-play drive capped by 13-yard Robert Griffin TD rush around the left end with 7 seconds left in the first quarter. The PAT was no good.
With his second rushing touchdown of the day, Griffin has tied the single-season school record with 13 rushing TDs (matches Steve Beaird's 13 in 1974).
3:13 p.m. -- Antonio "Cuddie" Johnson makes his first career interception to set Baylor up at the Tech 34-yard line.
3:05 p.m. -- This may be a technical sellout, but there are empty seats to be seen on this Thanksgiving weekend. A contingent of gold-and-green clad Bears fans are located in the North endzone.
The Bears convert on two key fourth downs en route to a 1-yard TD run by Robert Griffin that ties the score at 7 with 3:13 on the clock. The seven minute, 16-second drive is Baylor's longest of the season.
2:48 p.m. -- Senior nickelback Jake Lamar has set a new Baylor record by playing in his 47th career game. Fellow senior Vinny Rhodes has now played in 46 career games and is tied for second on the school games-played chart.
Tech scores on its first drive to take a 7-0 lead at the 10:29 mark.
Baylor vs. Texas Tech - Pregame Saturday, November 29, 2008 Heath Nielsen
2:35 p.m. -- Captains for today's game are Kirby Freeman and senior walk-on Ben Hixson.
This afternoon is senior day for Texas Tech. Star linebacker Daniel Charbonnet is out today and dressed in jeans at the on-field celebration.
Bears won the toss and will defer. Tech chooses to receive, Bears will kick.
2:02 p.m. -- The pregame clock reads 35:00 to kickoff.
Continuing our look around the pressbox, I count one NFL scout in attendance, from the Seattle Seahawks. There are also representatives on hand from the Fiesta Bowl and Alamo Bowl.
The Bears are wearing their all-white uniforms today, white jerseys over white pants. Just the second time this season with that combo, the first being in Stillwater.
1:20 p.m. -- The team has arrived at Jones AT&T Stadium, which is surrounded by lots of contruction in an area of Lubbock known as Overton. Included in the construction is a brand new hotel & convention center being built that will likely host future visiting football teams.
It's a sunny-but-chilly 52 degrees currently in Lubbock and the early arriving Red Raider fans are in the stands giving the first few Baylor players onto the field a warm welcome.
A small Baylor contingent is in the pressbox, including Voice of the Bears John Morris and Robert Sheikh (producer of Inside Baylor Sports) - who arrived in Lubbock today after a red-eye flight from California where they'd been with the men's basketball team. John will return to Anaheim after calling today's football game to rejoin the Bears in time for the Championship game of the 76 Classic to be played Sunday at 9:30 p.m. CST on ESPN2.
11:30 a.m. -- Baylor returns to action Saturday, Nov. 29, traveling to Lubbock, Texas, for a Big 12 Conference South Division game at Texas Tech. Kickoff between the Bears and Red Raiders is scheduled for 2:35 p.m. CST at Jones AT&T Stadium on the Texas Tech campus. The game, which is the regular-season finale for both teams, will be televised nationally on the Versus Network.
The Bears (4-7, 2-5 Big 12) did not play last weekend after snapping a four-game losing streak two weeks ago with a 41-21 victory over Texas A&M. Baylor is 0-4 on the road this season; the Bears have lost eight straight on the road overall and 10 straight road games in Big 12 play.
The Red Raiders (10-1, 6-1 Big 12) suffered their first loss of the season last Saturday, falling 65-21 at then-No. 5 Oklahoma. Texas Tech is ranked seventh nationally in both major polls and in the latest Bowl Championship Series rankings. The Raiders are 6-0 at home this season and have won seven straight home games.
